With PPL rate caps gone and large government mandated energy efficiency programs now available, now is the best time to upgrade your facility to a high efficiency lighting system.

REG started performing lighting retrofits after recommendations from energy audits of facilities often went undone for years. It inspired us to create a program that gets the best quality lighting while minimizing energy usage. And, the installation does not need to interrupt your productivity. Our flexible crews can work around your schedule, often including nights and weekends.

Not only will you see electricity savings by consuming
half the electricity of the outdated system, but these new high performance T8 systems are a benefit in several other ways including:

Eliminate ballast humming

Reduced flickering

Improved color rendering

Longer lamp life

Reduced system maintenance

Reduced light depreciation over time

Reduced lamp inventory

Now, with the Pennsylvania ACT 129 lighting rebates available, average lighting jobs are expecting a rebate check that covers approximately 1/3 of the installed cost which typically cuts a whole year or more off of the payback. These ACT 129 dollars aren’t going to be around forever though, and you should be sure to take advantage since you are paying for it as one of the line items on your electric bill. Be sure to check out the ACT 129 documentation for your utility if you are making other energy efficient upgrades to your facility as well since there are rebates for for items such as HVAC, compressed air, building envelope, etc.

Richards Energy Group is dedicated to providing our customers with the lowest possible overall operating costs by providing the highest quality products for each and every lighting retrofit. We have also recently partnered with the Sustainable Energy Fund to offer extremely competitive rates for our positive cash flow option. With the positive cash flow option, most clients will realize an immediate return on investment.

To schedule an analysis of the lighting at your facility, email Travis Keeney at tkeeney@richardsenergy.com or give us a call at (717) 898-6330 x116.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Richards Energy Group. Frank left PPL with the goal of helping electric end users save energy dollars, 15 years ago today. Times sure have changed since he was working by himself with a laptop in the dining room of his house. Since then REG has moved twice, first to a World War II era Quonset hut on the Landisville Railroad, and most recently to a restored farmhouse and barn overlooking the Chiques Creek and Lancaster Liederkranz, right between Mount Joy and Salunga. Richards Energy Group now has 10 full time and 5 part time employees as well as several contract employees. We’d like to thank all of our customers and REAP members as we reflect on our growth and the savings we’ve helped achieve over the past 15 years!

Public Utility Commission Chairman James Cawley to Address Group

With PPL electric rate caps expiring at the end of 2009, substantial cost increases are in the works which will affect all electric consumers in Eastern PA. A consortium of over 250 industrial and commercial companies, centered in Lancaster County, united 10 years ago through an organization called REAP to harness joint purchasing power. Existing members average $25,000/month in electrical utility charges. REAP’s 10th annual meeting will feature PA Public Utility Commission Chairman James Cawley on October 17th at Four Seasons in Landisville.
REAP was founded by Richards Energy Group, Landisville, eleven years ago, to help industrial and commercial businesses take advantage of group purchasing clout. REAP has tallied over $7 million savings since deregulation began in 1999. Frank Richards, President, stated “the challenges coming in 2010, fueled by expiration of PPL price caps, provide the consortium with new opportunities to achieve firm pricing with lower increases. But to mitigate these increases, it is imperative that we help Members consume less electricity through cost-effective conservation measures.” REAP is broadening its impact even more through its association with CPEC, the Central Pennsylvania Energy Consortium. This large group of non-profit businesses with its epicenter in Mechanicsburg, has tapped into REAP to enable electric power purchasing for its entire membership.
While REAP was formed to shop for power for its members, a strong secondary benefit has emerged…ongoing bill-auditing currently results in further member savings of $1 million per year through resolution of billing issues.
The Consortium meeting agenda on October 17th includes presentations by Chairman Cawley as well as subject matter experts on the Value of “Negawatts”, Current Energy Legislation, Commission Rulings, Demand-Side Response Programs that bypass the local utility, Intervention in Rate Filings, and Lighting Retrofit Options that add value to businesses.
Prospective members are welcome to attend, but pre-qualification and registration are required. Call 898-6330, extension 104, or email tgentzler@richardsenergy.com before October 15.

The Phillips Group reduces greenhouse gas emissions with lighting change

The Phillips Group of Middletown, Pa., has received the Orion Energy Systems Environmental Stewardship Award for a lighting change that substantially reduces electricity use and the emission of greenhouse gases.

Orion presents the award to companies that significantly reduce harmful greenhouse gases through the use of Orion’s patented lighting products and systems.

Phillips, a leading independent office products company, retrofitted its corporate office and warehouse with Orion’s patented high-efficient fluorescent platform, reducing electricity usage by 223,439 kilowatt-hours. The reduction in energy is expected to save The Phillips Group $19,190 annually in light-related energy costs.

“We’re honored to be recognized by Orion with this award,” said David Fleischer, Phillips’ chief information officer and director of facilities, “particularly because it symbolizes our company’s commitment to being good corporate citizens and caring for our environment.”

Added Peter Phillips, president of The Phillips Group: “We’ve found that reduced energy use and increased recycling don’t just make us feel good, but they’re really integral to the efficient and successful operation of our businesses.”

In addition to the energy cost savings, the lighting retrofit will keep 175 tons of carbon dioxide and 42 tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere annually. The reduction in greenhouse gases over 20 years equates to planting 820 acres of trees, removing 660 cars from the road or saving 423,640 gallons of gasoline, according to the EPA.

The environmental benefits and energy cost savings of the Phillips Group project are possible because Orion fixtures have been engineered to use a specially formed, highly reflective surface to harvest light emitted from all sides of a fluorescent tube and direct it downward.

“Making changes to your lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut costs and conserve energy,” said Frank Richards, president of Richards Energy Group, a Landisville, Pa., energy consultant that handled the Phillips retrofit. “We are happy to assist in the process and consider the outcome an extreme success.”

“We’re glad to have helped The Phillips Group benefit from energy efficiency,” said Orion President and CEO Neal Verfuerth. “We’ve worked hard over the years to develop products that save energy and money, while helping the environment and at the same time provide better and stronger light without our customer having to sacrifice; so it’s not exactly a surprise to us.

“The best part was that to get all this, The Phillips Group didn’t have to do without or give up anything. That’s the way we like to see things work.”

ECORE International has received the Orion Energy Systems Environmental Stewardship Award for their recent lighting change in both their York and Lancaster facility. These changes resulted in substantial environmental benefits by reducing the amount of electric power ECORE uses.
Orion presents these awards to companies that achieve significant environmental benefits through use of Orion products and systems.
At ECORE, contractor Richards Energy Group replaced conventional fluorescent and metal halide lighting with energy-efficient Orion high-intensity fluorescent lighting. This decreased lighting power usage by an 3,679,892 kilowatt-hours (kwh) per year, which reduced lighting-related electricity costs from $477,615 to $200,424 a year, a 58 percent saving of $277,191.
“Not only has the lighting change brought a reduction in energy usage and environmental benefits, but also has improved the working environment for all employees by raising the amount and quality of light in the manufacturing and office areas,” said John McFalls, director of operations at ECORE International. “All employees now have a safer and more pleasing environment to work in.”
The saved 3,679,892 kwh, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, means that over the 20-year life of the replacement fixtures, some 71,755 tons of carbon dioxide, 19,568 tons of carbon, 312.1 tons of sulfur dioxide and 150.5 tons of nitrous oxide – all greenhouse gases – will not enter the atmosphere.
The reduction equates to planting a 675-acre forest or removing 594 cars from the road a year, according to EPA statistics. It also is the conservation equivalent of saving 6,089,485 gallons of gasoline or 144,988 barrels of fuel oil during the 20-year period.
“ECORE is committed to developing and utilizing environmentally responsible manufacturing processes and technologies,” said Arthur Dodge III, president and CEO of ECORE International. “We would like to thank Richards Energy Group, for their expertise as we analyzed the efficiency of our lighting systems in both our York and Lancaster facilities. We are honored to receive this award and are especially pleased to know that the positive environmental impact that comes with this type of project will continue for years to come.”
The environmental benefits and energy cost savings of the ECORE International project are possible because Orion fixtures have been engineered to use a specially formed, highly reflective surface to harvest light emitted from all sides of a fluorescent tube and direct it downward.
“For the next few decades, a major story in the business world is going to be the wholesale changeover to energy efficient equipment,” said Neal Verfuerth, president and CEO of Orion. “We’re glad to be part of achievements like ECORE International’s lopping 3,679,892 kwh off the power grid and the environmental benefits that provides. That will tend to lessen upward pressure on power prices – an issue we’re all facing.
“Best of all, though, ECORE International didn’t have to sacrifice or do without to get better lighting at a lower operating cost. That’s the way we like to see things work.”
ECORE International manufactures and markets innovative, sustainable products and solutions for the global marketplace. Based in Lancaster, Pa., ECORE has made a thriving business out of finding creative ways to reduce, reuse and recycle for the past 18 years.
After 10 years, the Central Pennsylvania Energy Consortium is returning to its original purpose — reducing electricity costs for its members.

State-imposed caps on electric rates — a legacy of deregulation of the industry — begin to expire in two years. The eight-county consortium is developing ways to spare its 300-plus members from major increases in costs.

“We want to be in a position prior to the caps coming off so our members aren’t hit with outrageous rate increases,” said Paul Zeigler, consortium counsel.

Some experts have predicted 20 percent to 30 percent rate increases when the caps expire.

The energy consortium is open to governments, schools, churches, hospitals and other nonprofit organizations. It was founded in the mid-1990s to take advantage of electricity deregulation through bulk purchasing of power.

Electricity hasn’t been a focus of the alliance for several years, however, because competition dried up, Zeigler said. Instead, he said, the alliance has concentrated on saving its members millions of dollars on other forms of energy through bulk buying of natural gas, heating oil, gasoline and diesel fuel.

For example, consortium members last spring paid a locked-in price of $1.58 a gallon for gasoline, about 70 cents less than market prices at the time, Zeigler said.

The new electricity venture is about “avoiding sticker shock,” rather than cutting current costs, he said. The aim, he said, is to amass enough participants and buying power to secure rates that, while higher, won’t break the bank.

The consortium has hired Richards Energy Group of Lancaster as its electricity consultant. That engineering firm has other large clients, including Harley-Davidson, and should be able to make the consortium part of a massive buying pool, Zeigler said.

“We have to do something now. The pressure’s building,” he said. “I don’t see electricity costs dropping.”

The consortium plans to charge members $0.0008 per kilowatt-hour of electricity savings, Zeigler said.

He said its fees for other energy sources also are based on a proportion of the customer’s savings — 1 cent per gallon of savings on liquid fuels and 13.5 cents per metric cubic foot of natural gas. The consortium charges a one-time $100 membership fee.

The electricity initiative and other energy topics will be addressed during the consortium’s general membership meeting Monday at the Capital Area Intermediate Unit.
